‘The aim of the project is to support people in the Christchurch area who don't have a network of family/friends to give that practical help and support in times of crisis or illness. It may be a young mum who breaks her ankle and needs help getting her children to school, or an older person who comes out of hospital and needs someone to help them rebuild their confidence in coping or any number of other scenarios. It is the community helping the community and both recipient and donor benefiting from the experience’.  Rev Sandra Prudom, Chair of Christchurch Community Partnership.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to commit to a minimum number of hours each month to be a volunteer Angel?

No, that's why volunteering can fit so well around your existing lifestyle. Just tell us roughly how much time you would like to give - and we will match you up with someone suitable. It will be up to you both to agree a convenient time to visit that suits you both.

Will I get training and support to be a volunteer?

Yes. We will give you training so you know what to expect and so you can carry out our role with confidence. Sometimes just a half day is all you'll need. You will also get support from the coordinator and have regular meetings with other volunteers.

Will I get my expenses paid?

Yes. We don't want anybody to be out of pocket as a result of volunteering. That's why we pay all associates costs including travel, telephone, parking etc

Will I need to have a Police check?

All of our volunteer must undergo a DBS check (previously known as a CRB check). There is no cost to you if we apply for a DBS check on your behalf and usually these do not take longer than a few weeks to process. We will also need 2 references. In this time though we can start your training and induction - so it won't feel like you are waiting around.

What if I don't have anything in common with the person I am allocated?

As we know, sometimes people just don't 'click' (luckily this doesn't happen often!). If this does happen, don't worry. Just speak to us and we can try and allocate you someone you feel more comfortable with and we can reallocate the person you visited to someone else too.
